Overnight Backpacking List: What You Need to Bring

This is my overnight backpacking list. These are the clothes I usually bring when we head out on an overnight backpacking trip in the summer. You want to make sure you are ready for any type of weather, no matter what season you are hiking in. So, it is important to have a good, detailed, packing list for backpacking. Even though you may be hiking in 30degree weather, it still gets cold at night. It’s especially cold when you can’t have a fire. Moreover, during the summer months there will likely be a ban on fires in the back country. So, it’s a good idea to bring lots of warm clothes! Here is my packing list for your next backpacking trip:

Overnight backpacking list:

Hiking clothes: These are the clothes you will be hiking in, so you want everything to be lightweight for your trip. Also, make sure anything that you may not need right away (ex. sweater, sunglasses, hat, ect.) is easily accessible in your pack!

  • T-shirt
  • Sweater
  • Shorts
  • Wool socks
  • Hiking boots
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses

Camp clothes:  These are the clothes that you will be lounging around in at camp. You want these to be clean clothes, different from your hiking clothes. Furthermore, when you reach camp and cool down, you will get cold. It’s a good idea to have a clean pair of clothes to switch into so you don’t get a chill! Also you want to have a lot of layers, as you will probably be taking off and on different layers when you are setting up camp.

  • T-shirt
  • Warm long sleeve
  • Plaid button down
  • Wool Sweater
  • Vest
  • Rain Jacket
  • Camp shoes (I use crocs)
  • Long leggings
  • Bathing suit
  • Sports bras
  • Underwear
